Digital Accessibility Statement & Architectural Conformance
Rigorous universal access engineering, WCAG 2.1 Level AA design alignment, keyboard-operable vector blueprints, and screen reader semantic landmarks across all Ankylotron digital portals.
Universal Architectural Accessibility & Conformance Standards
The Ankylotron project is engineered for researchers, engineers, clinicians, and individuals of all physical and sensory abilities. We treat accessibility not as an afterthought or checklist, but as an essential engineering discipline woven into every interactive vector schematic and interface element.
Ankylotron is engineered to align with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA recommendations across all public documentation, CAD viewports, and interfaces. Furthermore, our digital systems are designed to meet Section 508 of the U.S. Rehabilitation Act and European Standard EN 301 549 technical specifications.
Accessibility alignment is continuously validated through automated continuous integration test suites and manual evaluation using assistive technologies including screen readers (JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver), screen magnification tools, switch inputs, and keyboard-only hardware navigation.
All visual data, vector CAD blueprints, and metrics possess text and programmatic equivalents for non-visual sensory modalities.
Every interactive control, layer toggle, and modal dialog is 100% executable without mouse or pointing device input.
Predictable navigation structures, explicit form validation cues, and clear technical definitions prevent operational confusion.
Semantic markup engineered to maximize cross-compatibility with current and future assistive tools and user agents.
Technical Standards Alignment
- WCAG 2.1 Success Criteria: Engineered to align with Level A and Level AA success criteria, including non-text content, reflow, contrast, focus order, and input assistance.
- Section 508 Standards: Aligned with federal electronic and information technology accessibility specifications.
- European Standard EN 301 549: Designed for compatibility with ICT accessibility specifications for digital interfaces.
To ensure uncompromising accessibility for researchers, engineers, and individuals with motor, visual, auditory, or cognitive differences, Ankylotron incorporates specific architectural accommodations:
01. High-Contrast Typography & Chromatic Ratios
Body text utilizes high-contrast slate (#e2e8f0) against deep blueprint backgrounds (#08090d), producing a contrast ratio of >14:1 (exceeding the 4.5:1 WCAG AA threshold). Section headings and metrics utilize white (#ffffff) and cyan (#00f0ff), delivering contrast ratios exceeding >12:1 and >18:1 (surpassing the 7:1 AAA standard).
Color is never used as the sole conveyor of information; all states, statuses, and data metrics include explicit textual labels and iconography.
02. Semantic Landmark HTML, Skip Navigation & Screen Reader Semantics
An accessible bypass anchor (<a class="skip-link" href="#main-content">Skip to main technical content</a>) is rendered as the first focusable element on every page, allowing keyboard and screen reader operators to bypass primary navigation and jump directly to the primary landmark <main id="main-content" tabindex="-1">.
Strict HTML5 landmark partitioning (<header>, <nav>, <main id="main-content">, <section>, <article>, <footer>) enables rapid landmark jumping via screen reader shortcut and rotor commands.
Form inputs feature explicit <label for="..."> bindings, programmatic descriptions (<aria-describedby>), and live validation regions equipped with role="alert" and aria-live="polite".
03. Keyboard-Navigable SVG Blueprints & Dynamic CAD Telemetry
Interactive vector schematics and CAD hotspots implement explicit tabindex="0", role="button", and aria-expanded attributes. Users can traverse blueprint layers, inspect telemetry nodes, and activate modal details using standard Tab, Shift+Tab, Enter, and Space keys with visible cyan focus rings.
Dynamic CAD telemetry regions and sensor status feeds are equipped with aria-live="polite" and role="status" attributes, ensuring real-time coordinate updates and biomechanical metrics are announced politely by screen readers without disrupting active speech queues.
04. Screen Reader Accessible SVG Nodes
Every SVG schematic incorporates descriptive <title> and <desc> elements paired with aria-labelledby or aria-describedby references. Non-informative grid patterns, cosmetic datum markers, and decorative crosshairs are programmatically hidden with aria-hidden="true".
05. Reduced Motion & Vestibular Protection (@media (prefers-reduced-motion: reduce))
The user interface respects system-level motion sensitivity preferences via @media (prefers-reduced-motion: reduce) media queries. When enabled, all continuous animations (including spinal column SVG oscillations, neural pulse particles, radar sweeps, and status beacons) are paused or converted to static equilibrium states, and scroll behavior defaults to instant translation (scroll-behavior: auto) to protect individuals with vestibular disorders.
Unlike conventional engineering blueprints presented as static bitmap images or inaccessible canvas elements, Ankylotron's CAD viewports are rendered entirely in semantic SVG with keyboard focus rings, high-contrast hover states, and live text fallbacks for screen reader users.
The following hardware and software assistive configurations undergo verification testing in our continuous integration pipeline:
| Assistive Technology | Operating System | Target Browser | Verification Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| NVDA (Latest) | Windows 11 Enterprise | Mozilla Firefox & Chrome | Full semantic landmark traversal & SVG title node announcements verified |
| JAWS 2024 | Windows 11 Enterprise | Microsoft Edge & Chrome | Form label bindings, ARIA live regions, and table headers verified |
| Apple VoiceOver | macOS Sequoia & iOS 18 | Apple Safari | Rotor landmark navigation & keyboard/touch gesture operability verified |
| Keyboard-Only | All Platforms | All Major Browsers | Skip link (<a class="skip-link" href="#main-content">) routing, zero focus traps; 100% interactive elements operable via standard keys |
| Reduced Motion Mode | Windows, macOS, iOS, Android | All Major Browsers | System-level @media (prefers-reduced-motion: reduce) suppression of continuous oscillations & smooth scrolling verified |
| Switch / Eye-Gaze | Windows & iPadOS | Chrome & Safari | Single-switch scanning & Tobii eye-tracker dwell clicks validated |
| High Contrast Mode | Windows & macOS | All Major Browsers | Forced colors media query preserves vector borders and focus indicators |
